Evidence of Space Exploration...On Earth | Michael Soluri

Michael’s presentation reveals the story telling highlights from his unscripted, behind-the-scenes access to portray and document a few of NASA’s high profile human and robotic space missions. These include documenting the ten year arc of the New Horizons mission to the Pluto system, the sun bound Parker Solar Probe and the last astronaut crew to train and repair the Hubble Space Telescope from a space shuttle.

Emphasizing the importance in being familiar with the history of photography, Michael discusses his documentary and portrait approach to exploring —with cameras, lenses and lighting, what it’s like working in the challenging work cultures of space flight.

He also shares his experiences in teaching the Hubble astronaut crew how to shoot more visually communicative photographs while in space. Lessons that can apply even here on Earth!

Michael concludes by discussing what he has learned and strategies for how to work on location including tips from how he manages his post-production work flow, editing, the importance of color-calibrated monitors, high quality printers, superior archival digital papers and website branding.
